How to Become an Environmental ConsultantEnvironmental consulting is often a form of compliance consulting, in which the consultant ensures that the client maintains an appropriate measure of compliance with environmental regulations. There are many types of environmental consultants, but the two main groups are those who enter the field from the industry side, and those who enter the field from the environmentalist side. Environmental consultants work in a very wide variety of fields. Whether it be providing Construction Services such as Asbestos Hazard Assessments or Lead Hazard Assessments or conducting due dillgence reports for customers to rid them of possible sanctions. Consultancies may generalise across a wide range of disciplines or specialise in certain areas of environmental consultancy such as waste management. Some environmental consultants also are involved in landscaping. Landscaping requires knowledge of plant requirements including full sun versus shade and soil drainage. Environmental consultants usually have an undergraduate degree and sometimes even master's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or some other science discipline. They should have deep knowledge on environmental regulations, which they can "consult" particular clients in the private industry or public government institutions to help them steer clear of possible fines, legal action or misguided transactions. Environmental consulting spans a wide spectrum of industry. The most basic industry that environmental consulting remains prominent in is the commercial estate market. Many commercial lenders rely on both small and large environmental firms. Many commercial lenders will not lend monies to borrowers if the property or personal capital does not exceed the worth of the land. If an environmental problem is discovered property owners that deem themselves a responsible party will most likely reserve monies in escrow in order to resolve the environmental impact. With increasing numbers of construction, agriculture, and scientific companies employing environmental consultancies, the industry can expect growth in the vicinity of 9.7 percent in 2008, amidst mounting public concern over environmental degradation and climate change. And while some companies are genuinely motivated by concern for the environment, for others, hiring consultants to appear to be "going green" has proven to be a useful marketing tool. Growing government funding into renewable energy and technologies producing low emissions is also helping growth, as organizations investing in research and development in these areas are often major employers of environmental consultants. Environmental consultants either work for or are hired by commercial or governmental organizations to assist in a number of areas where environmental concerns and governmental legislation have to be adhered to. Typically this includes any planning stages of a land development, or as part of an audit process, where a number of environmental assessments such as air quality impacts, land and environmental management, waste management and measuring contamination of land and water have to be made. The actual tasks performed on the job include a mixture of scientific data collection, auditing and analysis, reporting results and findings, presenting results to regulatory agencies and the general public, and negotiating on behalf of clients with regulatory agencies. For example, here is an example of an environmental consultant. Environmental consultants also may organize or take part in field surveys at the beginning of a consultation period, and can be required to continually keep up to date with environmental law and regulations and scientific findings and data. Consultants typically make money by billing their hours to the client, very similar to the business model of a law firm; however their billing rates are typically not as high as a lawyer. Training to be an environmental consultantConsultants usually recruit graduates at master’s or PhD level, and look for people who have relevant academic training. However, large consultancies are increasingly starting to offer graduate recruitment and training schemes to invest in junior staff. Minimum BSc (MSc advantageous) in relevant environmental science (i.e. marine biology, coastal sciences); - Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines; - Minimum of 5 years consultancy or other relevant experience. Previous experience of EIA is important but key focus will be upon your broader environmental skills and the additional knowledge you can bring to the team. The Senior/Principal Marine Ecologist will be experienced in the design and implementation of field survey programmes and statistical analysis of environmental data (particularly using PRIMER). Strong writing, communication and client management skills are vital as collaboration with scientists and building relationships with government officials, industry, managers, and other stakeholders is a key part of this position. You will be a strong team player with a flexible approach in your work in a multi-discipline environment.
